If you’re going to be swimming for 2-4 miles in New England ocean during the winter, you want to know the water conditions before you leave home. Damon Bosetti, a member of the Nahant Knuckleheads is building a buoy using an Arduino with GSM to “chirp” environmental measurements to their website so that everyone can be prepared.

Damon is going to use our 6 Watt solar panel to power the system along with the “family of constant-voltage Polulu power supplies.” The current requirements will likely be 2A to run the GPS when sending the SMS. Once that is finalized, that will drive the decision of which battery to use.
