The move towards standardizing on Micro USB means that we all have to buy and carry fewer AC chargers. We don’t need to have a stock of ten different ones in our drawers. So who is slowing down the progress?
We did an analysis of phone chargers in the market in advance of ordering more adapters and were able to drop the LG- and Sony Ericsson-specific adapters. Both of these manufacturers have moved to Micro USB. Samsung and Nokia both seem to be about halfway there, but are still releasing phones with their proprietary adapters. Of course, the iPhone goes its own route, but the USB charging cable works well off the battery’s USB port.
We’ll continue to stock a full range the adapters, but the standard kit will be a bit lighter and we’ll be shipping a bit less metal in every charger. Hopefully Samsung and Nokia will get the picture and move 100% to Micro USB soon.
