The New York Times had an article about the increase in use of wireless sensors to monitor infrastructure like bridges and buildings. Not surprisingly, many of them are using small solar panels to power the systems. The economic advantages are potentially quite large. With wired systems, you may have to “route kilometers of wire for power and data,” says Dr. Jerome P. Lynch, director of the Laboratory for Intelligent Structural Technology and an associate professor at the University of Michigan. The wireless systems are costing less than $100 each.

We’ve gotten requests to use our 2.0 Watt panels in a variety of monitoring applications including floating in the middle of the ocean. If you have any you’d like to share, please let us know.
