climbing with solar

Alpine photographer Jon Griffith recently climbed a new 6,000ft+ route on Mt Deborah in Alaska. After a drop-off by helicopter in the Hayes Range, they setup base-camp which included 2 x 17 Watt Kits to keep their gear powered up. Besides a Canon 5D and MacBook, Jon brought a custom drone designed to work at high altitudes.

They also developed a new solar panel mounting technique. It turns out that the notch in a backcountry ski where you place the skins is also a perfect point for sliding in a Voltaic panel. The bend at the ski tip also angles the panel nicely toward the sun.

They sheltered in the snow and used our USB Touchlight to light the space.

Thanks to Jon for sharing all the great pics. Read our guide on how to charge drones from solar power for more information.
